How to Get Rid of Toe Nails Fungus

Toenails fungus, a common fungal infection, often results in white, brown, or yellow discoloration of one or more toenails. If not treated early enough, this can escalate to foot pain, the spread of the fungus, or even loss of nails. It is, therefore, advisable to treat it as soon as possible.

To do so, you can either take prescription-strength anti-fungal medication or use home remedies. Most people prefer the latter as it does not produce side effects. Below are some of the most common home remedies;

Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil also referred to as melaleuca, has been discovered to possess antifungal properties. For this reason, it is believed that it can help get rid of toenails fungus. You only need to apply some onto the affected area using a cotton swab, twice a day. After a week or two, the fungal infection should go away.

Vinegar

Though its ability to eradicate toenail fungal infections has not been clinically proven, many people have attested to its effectiveness. To use it, pour some in a bowl and mix it with warm water, using a ratio of 1:2, then soak your toenails.

Garlic

According to a study carried out by Science Direct, garlic has strong antifungal properties, therefore, it can be used to treat toenails fungus.

To use it, chop up a clove and gently apply onto the affected areas. Ensure to leave it on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it off and drying your toes. You are bound to notice some significant changes after repeating this procedure for a couple of days.

However, it is important to note that garlic does not sit well with everyone, as it may cause a chemical burn on the skin.

Baking Soda

If you wear shoes and socks the whole day, your feet are likely to sweat. The moisture provides a conducive environment for fungi to thrive. This is where baking soda comes in, as it helps soak up any moisture on and around your toes.

To use it, mix a paste of baking soda and water then apply it onto the affected areas. Wait for about 10 minutes then rinse it off and properly dry your feet. Repeat the procedure until the fungus clears. For even better results, put some baking soda inside your socks and shoes to get rid of any moisture, as you go about your day-to-day activities.

Oregano Oil

Thymol, a natural compound with anti-fungal properties, is found in Oregano oil and can help get rid of nail fungal infections. Once you put a few drops of oil onto the affected areas, twice daily, the fungus shall disappear within a couple of days.

When to Seek Medical Help

If you have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes and weak immunity, toenail fungus may lead to foot ulcers or other problems. Consulting a doctor, in such cases, is therefore more preferable. Also, if the fungal infection persists despite trying the above-recommended methods, it is advisable to seek medical help.
